Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia estate, Monticello, is getting axed from the tail of the popular 5¢ piece, affectionately referred to as “the Nickel.” The All American bison, or buffalo, will return to the back of the coin reclaiming it’s place for the first time since 1938. Apparently, the new Buffalo Burger craze has bled over to coin enthusiasts as well as federal U.S. Mint designers (known internally as Da Minty Fresh Crew).
Did you know that obverse is the fancy name for the head’s side of a coin (reverse being tails)? Check out the NPR Real Audio interview if you have the chance, there are some interesting factoids about Jefferson, bison, and coins in general.
