The clever folks at Rebar turned a metered, public parking space into a temporary urban park in San Francisco one sunny afternoon.

Photo editor Dorothy Ho writes a beautiful note about her current project which puts cameras in the hands of migrant workers in Singapore in order to see what usually isn’t seen.
She writes…
“Jaded by repetitive news reports, our perspective of the world tends to be narrow and fearful. We live by stereotypes and cliches because it is easier to understand the world through a simple lens…”

Every since Google Earth became available for Mac yesterday I’ve been spanning the globe looking for:
Wow, I feel like a real (lazy) explorer! Vespucci, you ain’t got nothing on me, heh.

The classic air-cooled VW vans, called Kombis in Brasil, have reached the end of the line due to the Brasilian government’s new pollution laws which com into effect this year. I didn’t realize they were still making these vans until my first trip to Rio de Janeiro in 2000. All over Brasil, there’s a bazillion of those white vans puttering all through the streets. Kombis are the true workhorse of small and large businesses, hospitals, even the military. Though the traditional air-cooled ones will stop being produced, the factory will keep the body intact and add a water-cooled engine and radiator. In celebration for the engine change, they’ll produce around 200 Silver Edition kombis with the original air-cooled engines – which no doubt will become collector’s items.
There’s a full story at CBS News, also check out the Volkwagen Brasil site for more images.

But the real question is do you have the patience to play this little online game? Well, I say game, but it really isn’t. Rather, it’s one of those refrigerator letter magnet thingies that 100 people are using at the same time. So, essentially, it’s impossible to spell anything because people continuously steal your letters.
I was entertained for 1.5 minutes. Check it for yourself here.

Rocket designer (how cool is that title), Tim Pickens built a $750 rocket-powered bike that goes 0-60 miles per hour in about 5 seconds, which is right up there with sports cars like a Porsche. Read more about this kick ass, roof tar-powered bicycle here.

Here’s a great way to get your paws on a free calendar AND stick it to the man. Download each month or the entire 2005 calendar and send it to the color printer. No, for real, it’s a great calendar, a wnice idea for a promotional piece. And by the way, there’s some wonderful fontage as well as graphic design up in the mix.
And while you’re at it, go ahead and subscribe to their font feed. That is, if you love type the way I do!

Pimp my ride + those crazy french people + Nokia mobile phones =
Pimp mon mobile (that’s Pimp my mobile for all of you monolingual people out there).
The video part is a bit lengthy (as the person at Adverblog points out), but it’s a nice little concept – definitely not hatin’ on it.

Introducing my new friend, KentuckyFriedCruelty.com. He’s a 19-year-old PETA staff member that enjoys sunsets, walks on the beach, and apparently loves chicken. My main man KFC, err Chris Garnett has legally changed his name in order to protest Kentucky Fried Chicken’s chicken death policy. Take a pause for the cause and check out the sites, and stop all the fowl killing.

Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005. I know, try and hold back the tears.
In all fairness, I do remember around 2001 using IE on my G4 because it was the best one around. And to tell you the truth, there’s one magical feature that I have dearly missed since using this thing…the draggable page! Remember that one? Hold the spacebar, get the glove icon that allowed you to drag the page up or down, left or right.

After more than 25 years of court battles with Sony, Andreas Pavel has finally claimed the title as the inventor of what we all know as the “walkman.” Coming up with the concept in the late 1960s, he didn’t file for a patent until 1977. Sony began selling their Walkman in 1979 and began negotiating with Pavel in 1980. Pavel lost several legal battles, but never gave up and in 2003 eventually settled with the big Japanese company. Although the results of this deal were protected by a confidentiality clause, it’s been rumored that he received an eight figure sum plus royalties on Walkman sales.
Read the entire article from NY Times reporter Larry Rohter right here or here. There’s a wiki page on Mr. Pavel as well.
