The Puppini Sisters - Betcha Bottom Dollar

Puppini Sisters

If you ever wondered what Gloria Gainor’s woman-power single “I Will Survive” sounded like while the bombers were buzzing over Europe back in the early 1940s, you’re in luck. The candy-colored Puppini Sisters will swing you with WWII era standards like “Jeepers Creepers” and “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (From Company C)” and harmonize so closely you won’t be able to decide which one’s pinup is going in your beat up B-25 bomber. These girls are really on top of their game, Betcha Bottom Dollar was truly an exciting album to listen to—I can’t wait until they swing by NYC, I’ll bet it’s a gas!

Akbank ad

Akbank is a Turkish bank. Despite not understanding Turkish, the messaging is pretty universal—especially for a bank. The most amazing element though is the execution itself. It’s a simple pleasure to be zoomed out watching people act as pixels. It reminds me of the Human Space Invader clip I came across the other day. Perhaps this is a developing trend?

Mass produced, bioengineered pets implemented today

Genpet, Click for larger image Just in case you didn’t want to read about Genpets on their site, here’s a little taste of what your kids will be begging for this Christmas:

“Genpets are living, breathing mammals. Bio-Genica is a Bioengineering Company that has combined, and modified existing DNA to create the Genpets lineup. Genpets are flesh and blood just like any other animal.

The Genpetsâ„¢ come in 2 base configurations, a 1-year model, and 3-year model.

From there we’ve broken it down even further. While each Genpet may look the same, really they aren’t. Each Genpet™ comes with a color-coded personality. For example, a child that wishes to have a Genpet™ that is very energetic would choose a Red Genpet™ (see features section for details).
Engineered DNA, engineered personalities, and engineered lifespan, it doesn’t come any better than that. Bio-Genica has you covered on all bases. Just leave the details to us.”

Eeeeewwww, yuck!
UPDATE
Ok, calm down, apparently, it’s just art.

Happy birthday Chaz!

Charles Mingus by Brian Morris

While most people in America “celebrate” Earth Day (think, neo-hippies in city parks, peace symbols, solar panels, and the color green), today I am celebrating the birthday of Charles Mingus. If it wasn’t for artists like him, as far as I’m concerned this planet just isn’t worth saving. I obviously never knew the man himself, but over the years have gotten to know him so to speak through his music and books. He seems to me one of those rare people who trancended his own discipline (a musician, a composer, a bandleader, etc.) and was is first and foremost an artist. Mr. Mingus has without a doubt left an indelible mark on everyone around him as well as many generations too come. He spoke out about the many injustices he faced in his life, stood firm in what he believed, loved more than he hated, and so on—a fantastic inspiration to anyone.

So, best wishes to you Charlie Mingus…happy birthday!

Freaky Skittles ad

Skittles ad

Skittles has come out with one of the strangest TV ads I’ve seen in awhile. There’s something oddly attractive to the weird hippy hairiness. Their site is out their too, I just wish it was made with a little more care—the quality of the graphics is butt.

Beyond Green at M.A.D.

Under Discussion
Art: Allora & Cadzilla

Beyond Green is a travelling exhibition, currently showing at the Museum of Art & Design in Manhattan from February 2 – May 7, 2006, which explores not only the aesthetics of design and art, but the sustainability and impact on our environment. Curated by Independent Curators International, this group of artists spanning the globe one-ups the usual “recycled used tire art” (that I personally have a great distaste for) by presenting unique situational pieces that oftentimes address specific “flaws” in our current style of living (or lack thereof).

I haven’t seen this exhibit yet—only looked at the catalog pdf. However, I’m really digging Allora & Cadzilla’s work. One of my personal favs is their Landmark (foot prints) piece. And the still from Under Discussion (shown above) is appropriately the signature piece of the show.

Another group of artists worth mentioning is Free Soil (including Amy Franceschini of Futurefarmers). F.R.U.I.T.(Fruit Route User InTerface, but an open acronym), 2005 is just too cool for school!

I would guess that this travelling green art expo extravaganza would knock the hemp socks off of anyone with half an eco-friendly conscious, you can bet your 401K that I’m soooo there this weekend to check it for myself!

Pre-pixellated T-shirts

Ironic Sans sets you up for your television appearance by pixellating your favorite globally-branded t-shirt. The thing that really bothers me about this is how these shirts virtually eliminate the pixelators that work for TV shows. What does this say to those hard working people? No more job for you! American jobs are being automated and lost every day in the great country—where will it end? :)

EbOY My favorite new imageblog is from long-time favorite, pixel-by-pixel artists…Eboy. Subscribe to their xml feed here or go directly to their site at www.eboy.com. Either way you’re in for a treat—all of their work is so fun to look at, it’s humorous, imaginative and all of it is executed flawlessly!

There’s plenty of really nice posters at the Eboy store as well.

Quirky Quark

Quark

Back in September, Quark announced a departure of their existing logo and identity in exchange for a new, updated one. Well, the proverbial shit hit the proverbial fan when outraged designers cited that the new logo was a ripoff of around six different other brands. So, in response to the bitching and complaining from designers (who probably haven’t used Quark in 5 years anyhow), they put together yet another new logo.

Dreamweaver MX 2004 My initial thought is, “Geez, what a mess.” As I look at all three logos together, I kind of wonder why they changed the original logo in the first place. The new logo looks like a video game logo or something—the Hulk’s green eye popping out of a circle, I dunno. I do like how the tail of the “Q” is treated, but beyond the white, there are way too many concentric green circles around the damn thing. Also, the current palette is very reminiscent of Macromedia Adobe Dreamweaver, which is a little disappointing.

At the end of the day, what they should have done is used all the money from redesigning their logo and developed an OS X version of QuarkXPress back in 2001-2002, which is probably the whole purpose in “refreshing” the brand in the first place.

Happy Π Day, Mr. Einstein

Einstein, Pi day
Art: Brian Morris

Today (3/14, get it?) is National Pi Day. Coincidentally, it’s Albert Einstein’s birthday as well. A pie is also a circular thing people eat, but has nothing to do with that famously long number.

See what Yahoo! and Google think of π.
