Of all the palindromic words I know to express my feeling of IDEO’s new site design—WOW comes to mind. What a fantastic site! The homepage has a really nice opening quality, the navigation might wander from the “typical,” but it’s hard to get lost due to the crystal clear breadcrumbs (among other hints).
Like anyone else, I have a few personal preferences I’d change. I’m a rectilinear-kind-of-guy, so the diagonals on the subsequent pages bother me a little bit, but not a deal-breaker. But I do “get it,” the twist on a blueprint, updated for the internet. This metaphor of handmade actually carries over to the presentation of images—see the other proofs in the background of the main image. The use of color in the navigation is a little difficult to follow since the global navigation doesn’t compliment this scheme, but doesn’t necessarily hinder any experience.
At any rate, the control they give a user is pretty damn close to unparalleled. With each page or article (whatever you call it), you can make a pdf, e-mail it, bookmark it to any number of bookmarking services. It really behaves as an application while maintaining a personality.
Without a doubt, one of the best sites I’ve seen released in the past few years.

It’s no secret I’ve been lusting over Cannondale’s Bad Boy bike for well over a year. In the US, there’s three different models—pretty simple to choose from. Personally, I like the entry level model without suspension and standard caliper brakes. After some clicking around I discovered in Europe they have 8 models to choose from.
The one that particularly caught my attention was the Special Edition Raw Cannondale —a joint effort with denim brand G-Star. Holy frijole, this is a fresh ride!

For some reason, this year I’m all about watching the Olympics. So, I turned on my TV to find the messiest schedule spread across all kinds of channels I have no idea were interlinked. Since my job is building websites, I’m well aware of “usability issues” in making websites, but it was a big surprise to encounter such a huge usability fuckup from NBC—spreading out their Olympics coverage both on TV and the internet. There’s no easy way to search for “I want to see all the events Bulgaria is participating in” or “I want to see all of the table tennis matches.”
After fighting with their site, I managed to find some random ping pong matches, which I watched. What a pain in the ass having to install Microsoft’s Silverlight plugin to see some crappy-ass online coverage.
This isn’t an open-ended dis at NBC, rather a desire to see the Olympics or any other major event unfold as it unfolds—not some half-assed version on my computer screen or highlights on the evening news.
Oh, and I love ping pong, heh!

I suggest you eat at Rayuela while you’re in New York. They have a playful concept, “rayuela” = hopscotch en español, of hopping all over South and Central American for inspirational cuisine as well as making some mean traditional drinks to boot! For the full experience try one of their fantastic ceviches. ¡Buen aprovecho!

A pair of Levi’s 201 jeans were found “in a mine in the Rand Mining District, on the Mojave Desert, California.” They sold on eBay for $36,099. Shazam!

So, my favorite bookmarking app got a redesign—and I like it, it’s fresh! Looks like the intent was a little less Googley, more super-saturated Web 2.0ish with a few design cues from our stylemasters at Apple. Ok, fine—I’ll buy it. The one thing that’s really bothered me about delicious all these years is their identity. The mark of the 4 different colored squares is nice and minimal, so it satisfies “that” part of my brain. Then, we have their name, which is so fun and playful. However, the two solid brand directions don’t relate at all. I really wish they’d either lose one angle or the other and make it all come together.

Being a diehard fan of TED, I’m always anxious to see what new and amazing presentation is around the corner. Michael Moschen’s highly artistic approach to juggling and rhythm is another example of a really captivating “talk.”
