I just caught a wonderful animated short film on Sundance Channel called When The Day Breaks, directed by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby. Made from pencil and paint on photocopies, the visuals are nothing short of breathtaking, much attention to detail, and quite dreamy. the story is fantastic as well, I enjoyed seeing how two seemingly random lives are so interconnected (as all of our lives potentially are).
“A rooster has his last biscuit for breakfast and goes grocery shopping. A pig prepares her breakfast (potato peelings, with the potatoes thrown in the trash) and discovers she needs more milk. Their paths cross, a lemon falls into the sewer, and both lives are changed.”
Check it out for yourself of Sundance Channel:
Also, here’s the IMDb page for When The Day Breaks.

I don’t get too worked up about new films lately as every movie I’ve been to in the past few years has been disappointing. However, I came across a post that redirected me to Mike Mills’ new film Thumbsucker, his feature-film directorial debut. I’ve admired his design work since Air’s Moon Safari art, which he made (as well as their music and tour videos). I’m really excited to see all the details of his design background in the movie as well as the story, which looks quite interesting. And a final note, there’s a cool little interview with him over at Ready Made Magazine.

Every once in awhile I come across some bullshit that’s really, really hard to swallow. This is one of those times. Apparently, these jackasses think a hurricane was sent to wipe out all the sinful people of New Orleans. Now, I don’t really get too worked up about this kind of stuff because it’s just too ridiculous to even consider. As a matter of fact, it’s just downright funny (and sad) to think people publish this kind of garbage. Maybe I’m missing something, is this supposed to be on The Onion?
“We must help and pray for those ravaged by this disaster, but let us not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long,” Marcavage said. “May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits, and bring us trembling before the throne of Almighty God,” Marcavage concluded.”[God] sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”

Exhale my brothers an’ sistass, New York Metro has finally come out with this year’s undisputable list of choice ass NYC’s most beautiful people (of which 90% are either bartenders or waitresses). If there’s one thing I absolutely love about this list and this city is the diversity in beauty we have: a 30-something trapeze artist/filmaker, a middle-aged mother, a 90 year-old actress, and of course the ad exec, artist, designer, and such (bla bla bla).
One of these NYC beauties is hip hop’s royalty of raunch, Princess Superstar. She’s smokin, hot shit all up in yo’ grill! Born and raised in NY, she’s worked this city a few times over putting out her own records and promoting herself – you gotta respect that.
Oh, and how many white women do you know in hip hop? How many have tight ass rhymes with a filthy mouth like your drunk ass Uncle John who was in the Navy back in the day? She’s an original, period.
So, check out her site, buy her records, see her live, put her slutty poster in your gym locker, and if you see her on the street make sure you bow down to her highness.
Excerpt from I’m So…
I hate where I be livin on Clinton Street
The other day I saw a dead guy lyin under a sheet
And these 14 year old pushers tryin to sell me dope
And the fuckin salsa music I can’t even copeI used to really love livin on the Lower East Side
But when I walk down the street, “Yo Pussy need a ride?”
Is what I hear from every mac muthafucker givin hassles
Yo Punk I ain’t a stripper, you see some tassles?Crawlin all over the apartment are cockroaches and moths
And my ex-boyfriend says I act like David Lee Roth
All these record labels calling but they don’t produce the cash
Yo boy shave that goatee and uh then call me back
I’m working 2 different jobs and I’m always fuckin broke
Eatin tofu everyday and uh maybe a coke
Feelin down feelin bad feelin slow like a turtle
C’mon get me off the mike because I’m frontin like Urkel!

Danny Brown, of Sensei Studios shows us the power of the zen master’s mind as he reverses time, destroys balanced rock sculptures, and walks backwards/forwards. Check out the video of Balancing Point at IFILM.
I get the impression that gems like this, with their simplicity and grace, is probably why the person that invented the paperclip might be more successful at the end of the day than one who invents complicated machinery.

In a gothamist report, a lady skateboarder fell on a hot sewer cap and was branded. This could very well be the next wave of X-treme body mods to hits the streets.
She doesn’t realize how cool she is right now – being the first woman skateboarder to get a sewer cap brand stamped on her ass, so she’s suing Con Ed for “scarring her for life.” (Nice choice of words by the way)!

A new patented South African invention serves two great purposes at the same time. THIS is a remarkable invention!
Playing on a roundabout or merry-go-round has always been fun for children, so there is never a shortage of ‘volunteers’. As the children spin, water is pumped from underground (3) into a 2500 litre tank (4), standing seven metres above the ground. A simple tap provides easy access for the mothers and children drawing water (5).Read more here.

In this article the dog’s owner says:
The tiny dog has no hair, if you don’t count the yellowish-white tuft erupting from his head. His wrinkled brown skin is covered with splotches, a line of warts marches down his snout, his blind eyes are an alien, milky white and a fleshy flap of skin hangs from his withered neck. And then there’s the Austin Powers teeth that jut at odd angles from his mouth.

Remember the Poster Children? Yeah, that band from Illinois that has been touring like crazy since 1987. The same band (of Mac enthusiasts) that made their own enhanced CDs way before everyone else? Well, I kinda lost track of them along the way even though I always like their brand of DIY rock. As it turns out they’ve made 5 records since I last picked up RTFM in the record store. Anyhow, looks like they’re still into the technology thing and running their own radio station underground. Fire up your newsreaders/mp3 players and check out the Radio Zero podcasts.
Rick and Rose started Radio Zero back in 1998 to fill the time between tours with their band Poster Children. After a short stint on a Champaign, Illinois radio station, they’ve returned to their basement studio to talk about music, movies, parenthood and politics with each other and the occasional guest.

⬆ This is a strange video clip sent to me from this freak.
UPDATE:
I just figured out that this is Rubber Johnny by (rock*star) Chris Cunningham.
Johnny is a hyperactive, shape-shifting mutant child, kept locked away in a basement. With only his feverish imagination and his terrified dog for company, he finds ways to amuse himself in the dark. Rubber Johnny is the latest creation from the UK’s most imaginative filmmaker, Chris Cunningham. Featuring music by legendary electronic composer, Aphex Twin, this nightmarish and hallucinatory experimental short film is accompanied by 40 pages of drawings and photographs – Cunningham’s first published book of original artwork.
